Unemployment benefits will expire today because the Democrats failed to pass an extension. In addition to unemployment benefits, the legislation would have held off the planned 21% Medicare pay cut to physicians. The battle arose because the Democrats wanted to put the $10 billion dollar price tag on the federal charge card like they always do despite the fact that they could have used already appropriated stimulus funds or even returned TARP funds. Senator Jim Bunning objected to the Democrat scheme and showed what real courage is in Congress. The Democrats could have easily passed the bill with Senator Bunning’s vote if they had just agreed to pay for it rather than again borrow the money. At any rate the bill only extends the benefits for 30 days like everything Congress does, it just keeps putting off the hard decisions.
Yesterday the Republican Party of Kentucky Executive Committee met and expressed its support for the courage of Senator Bunning. The liberal Democrats are trying to play politics blaming Bunning and accusing him of not caring for those out of work. However the truth of the matter is that the Democrats continue to put more Americans out of work with their deficit spending when they had the money already appropriated and could have easily passed the bill without adding to the deficit.
