Governor Beshear made it clear tonight that he is the gambling governor.  Beshear continues to make gambling the cornerstone of his administration.  He can’t wait to get more Kentuckians in front of video gambling terminals.  In one breath he is promoting new buildings at our colleges and universities while in his next he promotes the most mindless form of entertainment to entrap Kentuckians in a cycle of addiction and poverty. Why not prostitution?  Why not legalize drugs and hand out needles?  We need money don’t we?  Those who have not learned the lessons of the past are ignorant.  Beshear knows better; gambling is a vice.

While I do agree with your comments morally, 100% beyond doubt especially in this economy when folks are already down on their luck, gambling is the last thing any of our elected officials should be pushing. It is morally wrong, but what can you expect from the same party that supports and even funds the slaughter of innocent unborn babies?

Legally though, at least as far as the US and KY Constitutions are concerned, gov’t was never intended to protect us from ourselves. We as Americans were supposed to be able to live our lives as we see fit with no restrictions on what we can do outside of essentially violating the 10 Commandments. So long as we aren’t harming one another nor seeking to unlawfully take property from one another (as the gov’t routinely does), we are supposed to be able to do anything and everything we desire. Be it sell our bodies, imbibe whatever, or build a bigger bucket for people to willingly throw their money into (slots). As far as the “law of the land”, gambling would be permissible.

Morally, I’ll stand exactly on the same grounds as you – it’s sickening to even consider pushing gambling especially given our current economic/job crisis.

Chuck, I would normally agree with your libertarian view on gambling as long as our liberal friends don’t ask me to feed and cloth their kids, pay for their rehab, and assume their mortgage default after they lose all their money.

Indeed I concur. Not a single individual should be paying for another without 100% consent from the giving entity. Sure we can all pitch in for highways, national defense, border security (err, still waiting for that one), even have a emergency assistance response department as FEMA was intended to be. FBI can go as it is essentially unconstitutional anyways, and NSA and CIA could be combined and tax funded. But it is absolutely criminal for the gov’t to rob Peter to pay Paul. And the checks and balances should have called Capitol Hill out on that many years ago. Size, scope, and budget of our gov’t needs to be majorly downsized – especially entitlement programs!
